Lake Days, Gravel Roads and Muddy Boots

Around Lincoln, sand and mud come from everywhere: Branched Oak and Pawnee Lake, ball fields after a spring rain, job sites, and the gravel roads all over Lancaster County.

Sand is the worst of it. It's heavy and sharp, and it sinks to the bottom of the carpet where a regular vacuum can't reach. Every time you step on it, it grinds against the fibers like sandpaper. Mud dries into the carpet and floor mats, and gravel dust settles into the vents and seams.

  • Sand in the carpet, seat tracks and seams
  • Dried mud on floor mats and door sills
  • Gravel dust in the vents and on the dash

Why Sand Is So Hard to Get Out

It's not you. Sand really is the hardest dirt to vacuum out of a car.

Sand grains work their way down between the carpet fibers, all the way to the backing. A household vacuum pulls from the top, so it gets the grains sitting on the surface and leaves the rest. Mud is the opposite problem: when it's wet it smears, and when it dries it locks into the fibers.

  • Let mud dry firstWet mud smears. Dry mud breaks up and vacuums out much easier.
  • Beat the floor matsTake them out and smack them against a wall or post before you vacuum them.
  • Brush, then vacuumA stiff brush loosens sand from the fibers so the vacuum can grab it.
  • Don't add waterWet sand turns into a paste that soaks deeper into the carpet.

How We Get Sand and Mud Out at Our Shop

It's all part of the Full Interior Detail.

  1. Mats out, loose dirt off

Floor mats come out and get cleaned on their own, and the loose dirt goes first.

  2. Compressed air blowout

Sand and dust get blown out of the seat tracks, vents, seams and the tight spots between the seats and console.

  3. Deep vacuum

Seats, carpet, under the seats, the seat tracks and the trunk.

  4. Shampoo and extract

The carpet, mats and cloth seats are shampooed and extracted with commercial grade carpet extractors, which pulls out the ground-in dirt a vacuum can't.

  5. Sills, jambs and cup holders

Door sills, door jambs, cup holders and door pockets get cleaned out too.

  6. Dry and a final check

Our shop is climate controlled, so everything is dry by pickup. Then we text you that it's ready.

What We Can and Can't Fix

We can usually fix

  • Sand in the carpet, seat tracks and trunk
  • Dried mud on carpet, mats and door sills
  • Gravel dust in the vents and on the dash
  • Mud on the outside, with an Inside and Out package

We can't fix

  • Carpet that's worn through from years of grit
  • Carpet padding that's still soaked from water getting in, which can lead to mold, and we don't take mold or mildew jobs
  • Scratches in the dash or trim from sand and tools

A really muddy outside can add a small charge too. We'll always tell you before we add anything.
