It's not just the cold. It's what the city puts on the roads to keep them safe. According to the City of Lincoln de-icing fact sheet, Lincoln treats its streets with a salt brine made from salt, water, and beet juice, sprayed at about 50 gallons per lane mile before storms. The beet juice makes the brine sticky so it stays on the road. That's great for traction, and it also means it sticks to your lower doors, wheels, and undercarriage.

- Carpet and floor mats: Salty slush from your boots dries into those white crusty stains that regular vacuuming can't pull out.
- Interior moisture: Wet mats and damp carpet trap moisture, which leads to foggy windows and musty smells by February.

Step 1: Start With a Real Hand Wash and Clay Bar
You can't protect dirty paint. Wax or sealant applied over grime just locks the grime in. Before winter, your car needs a proper hand wash from top to bottom, including door jambs, wheels, and the lower panels where road spray collects.
After washing, run your hand across the hood. If it feels rough, that's embedded contamination that washing alone won't remove.
